Description

MATH199 is a course in calculus and linear algebra. This STAR course is designed for bright secondary school students who have excelled in level 3 NCEA Mathematics (or equivalent) and wish to take level 100 mathematics while still at school.

MATH199 (C) is a two semester, 30-point programme, aligned with MATH102 in Semester 1 and MATH103 in Semester 2. Although the primary source for content is online, MATH199 students  will be required to attend a class from 4.15pm to 6.30pm every Thursday during the UC term times.  The fee for this course is covered by the Faculty of Engineering: there is NO COST to students or schools, including international students.

MATH199 (C) runs to a UC year (not the school year). There will be an introductory session the week before the course begins, on Thursday 15th February, 4:15-5:30pm, in Meremere 108. Teachers and parents are welcome to attend if they wish.

This is a course on linear algebra and calculus. Linear algebra is about matrices and vectors, and deals mainly with the algebraic problems of solving systems of linear equations. It is also used to solve problems in geometry. The calculus part of the course deals with derivatives, integrals, differential equations, infinite series and the application of these ideas.

Recommended preparation:
About 20 credits of mathematics with a good proportion of excellences at NCEA Level 3, or the equivalent for students not doing a full NCEA programme.

Timetable Note

IMPORTANT

Lecture A begins at 4.15pm; the doors for the lecture room will be open from 4pm onward, with the 4.15pm start.

Drop in class A: this is a once-off information session, running 4:15-5:30pm in Meremere 108. Doors will open at 4pm to give time for students to find a seat.

Thursday classes: a lecture in Meremere 108 from 4:15-5:30pm, followed by a tutorial in Ernest Rutherford from 5:30-6:30pm. Again, doors open at 4pm if students wish to come early.

Computer lab A is a once-off session replacing the first tutorial, and will also run 5:30-6:30pm.

Scholarships:

There are two scholarships associated with this course.

Students who attain A+ in MATH199 and then enrol in any undergraduate programme at UC are eligible for the AIMS Scholarship, worth $5,000.
Students who enrol in full time study within the School of Mathematics and Statistics after excelling in MATH199 are encouraged to apply for the UC Mathematics and Statistics STAR Scholarship, worth $15,000. Up to three of these are awarded annually.
