Purpose of Thursday 12th meeting:

The meeting on Thursday 12th will involve short contributed presentations and discussions for those interested in plant species radiation in New Zealand. The aim of the workshop is to bring together researchers with findings from the study of different New Zealand plant groups who are interested in contributing to jointly co-authored papers and talks we hope to present at the International Botanical Congress in Vienna in 2005 http://www.ibc2005.ac.at/.

A symposium proposal has been submitted to the committee for the International Botanical Congress which is to be held in Vienna in 2005. The theme of the proposed Symposium covers:

  • New Zealand as a testing ground for hypotheses on dispersal/vicariance
  • the impact of habitat on plant diversification
  • notable features of the New Zealand flora
  • the role of plant breeding systems in radiation
  • hybridisation in species radiation and
  • model plants in investigating the genetics underlying morphological and ecological diversification.

It is envisaged that each short talk in the proposed IBC symposium will represent a synthesis of findings from different research labs in New Zealand, and that direct links will be made to posters at the IBC detailing the primary authors' work.

Even in the advent that our symposium proposal is not successful we still plan to produce jointly co-authored papers that will be available electronically on the NZ Plant Species Radiation Group Web page. We will also investigate having these papers published in hard copy.
