Ruahine Lodge Dannevirke, New Zealand
Dannevirke (population 6000, altitude 200m) is a town 50 km north east
of Palmerston North. It was founded as a planned settlement by Scandinavian
immigrants about 1870, to cut road and rail links through the "Sixty mile
bush". The town is in the lea of the Ruahine Mountain Range (1000 - 1500
metres) 10 km west and lies in the upper Manawatu River valley.
The Ruahine Lodge was the Nurses' home for the town's hospital, closed
in 1997 in a fit of right wing fervour by National Government. It has 95
single, twin, double and triple bedrooms, a large meeting room, where we
will hold our conference, and a catered dining hall and bar. Adjacent facilities
in the extensive grounds include swimming pool, tennis courts, children's
play area, car park and gardens. The Lodge is about 2km north of the town
centre.
