Postgraduate studies
Funding
International students pay fees at the domestic rate for their PhD studies at UC.
The most common form of funding is the UC doctoral scholarships. These awards pay tuition fees and give a generous living allowance for three years (PhD) or 1 year (Masters). There are two application rounds each year with deadlines of October 15th and May 15th. The university has similar scholarships for international students with the same application process. Applications to the university scheme are primarily judged by the GPA (or equivalent) of the student.
Each year the department also awards some scholarships. These offer funding at a similar rate to the university scholarships. The deadline for applications for these is December 1st and June 1st. We expect all students who apply under the department scheme to also have applied to the university scheme. Applications to the department scheme are judged by the GPA of the student and the level of support of the supervisor. If you do not have the strong support of a supervisor within the department you will not receive a department scholarship.
In some cases, alternative funding may be available for specific projects and the project supervisor will advise you about this.
Other sources of funding include UC College of Engineering scholarships (for Women and Maori students). The university also has agreements with some countries (e.g. China and Malaysia) concerning funding. To find out more about these contact the university scholarships office.
