Two grads taking a break outsidePostgrad life in the maths and stats department at UC is both challenging and rewarding. The lecturers are very knowledgeable in their field of research and are also great supervisors for theses. Also, the postgrad community is supportive and close-knit, and is made to feel like part of the department. We have weekly postgrad talks to practice our presentation skills as well as giving us an opportunity to learn about a new subject every week. In fact we have a culture of excellence in presentations, winning numerous awards for talks and posters at various conferences.

Every year, postgrad students can attend the New Zealand Mathematics and Statistics Postgrad Conference, which involves postgrad students from all over New Zealand, and is for sure one of the yearly highlights. Students in the department are generally well funded and encouraged to travel to conferences in their field of research. For all these reasons and more, this is a fantastic place to start your academic career with a postgrad degree.
