Title: Fast and economical small displacement monohull vessels

Abstract:
Marine surface vessels must overcome resistance originating from viscous and pressure forces. The speed limitations inherent to displacement-type hulls prompted the development of less efficient, but faster, semi-planing or planing-type hulls, now widely used in commercial applications.
Rising fuel costs and shrinking profit margins in recent years have seen most of these hulls being frequently operated at low speed in displacement mode again in order to control operating cost.
We will discuss the potential for developing new displacement hulls able to offer higher average operating speeds than existing vessels with significantly lower fuel consumption by presenting a combination of real-world data and CFD results.
