Excursion - Pirongia hike

Date: Wed, Jan 12 (TBC, depending on weather)

In keeping with established tradition, a tramping trip (= day hike) will be organised during the week of the meeting. The target is to climb Mt Pirongia, an extinct volcano reaching up to 959 metres. Most of the tramp is in native forest with occasional distant views and an excellent view from the top. The track is quite rough in places so you should bring good boots; strong shoes would be okay instead. It might be cold on top or it might rain so you should bring a day pack with parka and warm clothes in case.

To find out more about Pirongia (and surrounds) a good place to look is the DOC brochure.
More information about the tracks can be found here.

Please note: depending on the final conference schedule and weather, a different hike may be arranged.
