Mt. NgauruhoeOverview:

A workshop on the latest developments in phylogeny and genome analysis, will be held at the Skotel, Whakapapa village, by the active volcanoes Ruapehu and Ngauruhoe (the setting for Mount Doom in the Lord of the Rings trilogy).

This workshop will be the 11th annual New Zealand meeting on the interface of mathematics and biology in the study of phylogeny and molecular evolution. It will be held in the spectacular volcanic plateau region (Tongariro National Park) of the central North Island.

Visit the Skotel web site for location details There is a variety of accommodation choices at the skotel ranging from backpacker accommodation with self catering to serviced deluxe double rooms. The skotel has special rates for participants of the meeting and is the actual site for presentations and lectures. The venue is very family friendly.

Preferred method of payment is by credit card, eftpos or cash, and can be made directly at the Skotel at registration on Sunday evening. We are limited to 50 participants, so if you are interested in coming then you need to pre-register immediately. If you haven't already registered your intent to attend the conference, please do so by emailing Joy Wood.

Please note that you will need to prepare your own dinner on Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday evenings. Kitchen facilities are available - but bring your own food to prepare as supplies are thin at the Volcanic Plateau. Basic Accommodation

We have booked out the Skotel Annex for accomodation. There are 5 singles, 12 twins, 1 double ensuite, and a flat with 3 doubles. There is also some similar style accomodtation in the Skotel building itself that Joy Wood can book. The cost of this type of accomodation is $20 per person, per night, if you bring your own bedding (e.g. sleeping bag and pillow), or $25 per night if bedding is supplied by Skotel. If you want this type of accomodation, then it is very important that you book this accomodation with Joy Wood when you pre-register for the meeting.

Note: For students requesting this accomodation, we are able to pay the accomodation costs.

Other Accommodation:

There is more expensive accomodation available at the Skotel (chalets, deluxe and standard rooms) and other accomodation available in the village. There is also accomodation in National Park, but please note that National Park is 16km from the Skotel. If you want other accomodation then you need to book this directly yourself. It is important that you book accomodation as soon as possible.
