Description:

The workshop will be on theory, methods and applications of computational homology to problems in dynamical systems. The main emphasis will be on nonlinear dynamics, but from a topological and combinatorial framework. Examples of applications to topics from Biology, Materials Science, Fluid Flow, and Granular Flow will be given, depending on the interests of the participants.

More details:

Algebraic topology, especially homology, provides a rigorous computational framework in which discrete local data can provide information about global structure of nonlinear objects and maps. The past decade has witnessed tremendous advancements in computational topological techniques. This includes new concepts, algorithms and code. This workshop will bring together a variety of speakers with different expertise ranging from computational homology to the analysis of image- and time series data to computational dynamics. The goal will be to provide an introduction to some of the concepts, techniques and applications of this growing subject. The tentative list of specific topics that will be covered includes:

  • Efficient algorithms for computing homology
  • Conley index theory
  • Image processing
  • Analysis and quantification of patterns in fluids and granular flow
  • Computational analysis of nonlinear dynamics arising from biological models

The lectures will describe the algorithms involved, and online links to the corresponding software will be made available.

The workshop will be held in Room 445 of the Erskine Building.
