New Zealand Mathematics and Statistics Postgraduate Conference 2019

YMCA Wainui, Canterbury, South Island
22-25 November 2019

The New Zealand Mathematics and Statistics Postgraduate conference (NZMASP) has been an annual event for postgraduates in New Zealand from 2007. It has since then been a platform for students to gain experience in presenting their work to an audience. Attendees and winners of the NZMASP student talk prizes have often gone on to win the Aitken prize for best student presentation at the New Zealand Mathematics Society (NZMS) Colloquium and the New Zealand Statistical Association (NZSA) Best Student Presentation award at the annual NZSA conference.

All New Zealand PhD, Masters, and Honours students, as well as students in any other postgraduate program, associated with departments of Mathematics and/or Statistics are invited to this year's NZMASP conference in Canterbury, South Island. All conference attendees are expected to give a 15-minute talk about their current research work, with 5 minutes for questions.

Registration is now closed! Please submit your abstract before the 31st October 2019.

Best Presenter Prize

As in previous years, the best speakers in applied/pure mathematics and statistics will be awarded with a prize. Each speaker will be assigned to the category under which they registered — with some basic sanity checks in place. If there are any issues or you would like to have your talk run under a different category as it would be more fitting, just let us know and we will change it accordingly.

After the last talks, you will be able to cast a vote for best speaker in each of the three categories on ballots we will give you. We will collect the result and normalize according to how many people were present in any given talk. From these weighted votes we will determine the winners.

Attendees with caregiving responsibilities

If you are considering travelling with children and you would like some help or advice about this, please contact Rodelyn Jaksons. We are more than happy to help with things like child-friendly facilities at the conference venue, informal babysitting arrangements, family-friendly accommodation options and childcare facilities in the local area.

The following caregiver support grant(s) may be useful:
  • ANZIAM NZ Branch Caregiver Support Grants (no official closing date but we recommend applications are submitted as soon as possible)

Our Diversity and Equity Statement

Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion are central to the goals of the New Zealand Mathematics and Statistics Postgraduate (NZMASP) Conference.
  • Equity at its heart is about removing gender barriers, biases, and obstacles that impede equal access and opportunity to succeed;
  • Diversity goals aim to progress towards a research community and conference population that reflects the diversity of society;
  • Inclusion is about creating a conference program and environment that is free from discrimination and where every participant feels welcome, included, respected, and safe.
In order to promote the above goals of equity, diversity, and inclusion, NZMASP 2019 aims for
  • Committee diversity – have members of the organization committee such that the resulting populations are diverse with respect to gender, geography, and research expertise. This year's committee is comprised of 9 members, 5 of which are women;
  • Speaker diversity – recruit invited speakers and panelists from diverse populations, backgrounds, and research areas within mathematics and statistics, to increase diversity in thinking and perspective.

(inspired by the ASE 2019 Diversity and Inclusion statement, which is based partly on the ICSE 2019 Diversity and Inclusion Plan by Jo Atlee).
