Overview:

A workshop on the latest developments in phylogenomics and genome analysis, will be held at the Skotel, Whakapapa village, by the active volcanoes Ruapehu and Ngauruhoe (the setting for Mount Doom in the Lord of the Rings trilogy).

This workshop will be the 20th annual New Zealand meeting on the interface of mathematics and biology in the study of phylogenomics and quantitative molecular evolution. It will be held in the spectacular volcanic plateau region (Tongariro National Park) of the central North Island.

Visit the Skotel website for location details. There is a variety of accommodation choices at the skotel ranging from backpacker accommodation with self catering to serviced deluxe double rooms. The skotel has special rates for participants of the meeting and is the actual site for presentations and lectures. The venue is very family friendly.

Selected pre-registrants will be informed by mid September, when we will provide details for payment options. We will also advise accommodation options at that time, as we are negotiating discounted rates for Doom16 attendees at the Skotel.

Registration fees:

Academics $300NZD
Students $200NZD

Payment for registration and Annex accommodation will soon be available through this web site using an online credit card facility. Payment after 15 January will incur a $50 NZD administration charge.

There are limited accommodation options in Whakapapa Village. Some options in the village are indicated below. There are many more options available in National Park, however please note that National Park is some distance from the conference venue (Also please note that Whakapapa Village is closer (adjacent to) to Tongaririo National Park than is the town called “National Park”).

See options listed here: www.hotelscombined.co.nz/Place/Tongariro_National_Park.htm.

Whakapapa Village (site of the conference venue)

Chateau - www.chateau.co.nz/

This is luxury accommodation within a few minutes walk form the conference venue.

Skotel - www.skotel.co.nz/

THIS IS THE CONFERENCE VENUE. For Skotel standard rooms, deluxe rooms, cabin and some backpacker style (shared) accommodation inside the hotel (i.e. not in the Annex) please contact the hotel directly manager@skotel.co.nz.

Please note that at present there is a question about availability of standard room, deluxe room, and cabin accommodation in the skotel on the Monday night 15th Feb (on all other nights there is availability of these accommodation types at the Skotel). Monday 15th accommodation may free up as the numbers for a pre-existing booking are yet to be finalized. Meeting participants wishing to stay at the Skotel in standard room, deluxe room, and cabin accommodation might need to book alternative accommodation for the Monday night. In discussing with the Manager at the Skotel ask to be waitlisted on the Monday night if this is your preference.

For Skotel Annex budget accommodation: twin share (12 rooms available), single (4 rooms available), double (1 room available). There is availability continuously from 15th - 19th Feb. For this accommodation please make your booking through Colleen Blair when you register.

Update: more standard/deluxe room accommodation is likely to be available at the Skotel for our meeting and that participants interested in this accommodation should contact the manager at the skotel by emailing Wayne regarding this accommodation.

Getting there:

Whakapapa village is situated on Mount Ruapehu in the centre of the North Island. International visitors will normally arrive in New Zealand at one of the three main centres (Auckland, Christhchurch or Wellington). The nearest cities to Whakapapa village with airports are Palmerston North, Rotorua and Taupo. From these three cities, Whakapapa village is still at least 2 hours by car, train or bus.
